Shivasharana Haralayya now on celluloid
DH News Service Gulbarga:
A cinema on 12th century saint ‘Shivasharana Haralayya’, who hails from Gulbarga district, is on the anvil.

The shooting of the film would commence from August 15, at Moorusaviramath in Hubli.

This was announced at a press conference here on Wednesday, jointly addressed by film producers Sadanand B Terdal and T M Veerayya and Assistant Director Vinayak Basava.

Mr Terdal said, the film was being directed by noted director Purshotam, who was also the script writer, and the music was by Jimmy Raj.

He said, the title of the film ‘Shivasharana Haralayya’ was registered last year, while the film team had selected locations for shooting the film in Gulbarga, Aihole, Pattadkal, Chitradurga, Bijanalli in Gulbarga district and other places.

Stating that the film would be shot in 45 days, he said, noted Kannada film actor Sridhar would be appearing in the role of Haralayya, while Shruthi would be donning the role of Haralayya’s wife Kalyanamma.

Other noted actors like Ashok, Srinivas Murthy, Tara, Mukhyamantri Chandru and others would be roped in, he added.

Mr Terdal said, side-actors for the film would be selected from Gulbarga itself, with the selection being held in the Kannada Bhavan premises in the City on July 15.

Rs 50 lakh budget

Pointing out that the budget of the film had been pegged at Rs 50 lakh, he said, the film would be containing around 15 vachanas.

Important stages in the life of Haralayya would be depicted, the producer added.

Referring to the importance of Haralayya, Mr Terdal said, while Lord Basavanna strived for a casteless society, it was Haralayya, who belonged to a low caste, agreed to marry his son Sheelavanth with a Brahmin girl Lavyanyavathi at the behest of Lord Basavanna.

However, he said, a minister in the Bijjala kingdom, Kondimachanna, asked King Bijjala to punish Haralayya for this.

Ultimately, Haralayya was punished with death sentence for marrying his son with a Brahmin girl.

Mr Terdal said, such was the respect of Haralayya for Lord Basavanna that he had peeled the skin from his thigh and prepared had footwear and had presented it to Lord Basavanna.

“These slippers are still exhibited at Bijanalli, a village near Malkhed in Gulbarga district,” Mr Sadanand Terdal added.
